The Referral Specialist/Patient Coordinator is responsible for managing patient referrals, coordinating specialist appointments, and providing exceptional support.
This position requires a strong understanding of insurance requirements, referral processes, and excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
Responsibilities: Referral Management:
Process and track all patient referrals, ensuring timely completion and adherence to insurance guidelines.
Obtain necessary authorizations and pre-certifications from insurance companies.
Maintain accurate records of referrals and correspondence.
Communicate effectively with referring physicians, specialists, and patients regarding referral status.
Troubleshoot referral issues and escalate complex cases as needed.
Stay up-to-date on insurance requirements and referral procedures.
Patient Coordination/Reception:
Greet patients and visitors in a friendly and professional manner.
Answer phone calls and schedule appointments.
Verify patient insurance information and demographics.
Collect co-pays and process payments.
Prepare charts and ensure all necessary paperwork is completed.
Maintain a clean and organized reception area.
Assist patients with inquiries and provide general information about the practice.
Manage incoming and outgoing mail.
Other Duties:
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Participate in team meetings and training sessions.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required
Proven experience in a medical office setting, specifically with referral processing and patient coordination.
Strong understanding of medical terminology, insurance procedures, and HIPAA regulations.
Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
Proficient in using electronic health records (EHR) systems; specifically AthenaHealth.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
