Dawson Med UC & PC, Medical Assistants are responsible for supporting the provider with patient care and other administrative/clinical needs. This requires a basic knowledge of medical office operations and nursing methods. The Medical Assistant’s immediate supervisor is the person appointed as Clinical Lead.
Summary of Responsibilities: Specific functions and responsibilities of the Medical Assistant position include, but are not limited to the following:
Maintaining a smooth and orderly patient flow by making sure patients are checked in and screened as quickly as possible.
Assisting the staff in performing the initial triage for patients who telephone the office concerning an emergency medical condition or arrive at the office for either a scheduled or unscheduled appointment.
Executing and documenting the following as instructed by the provider: vital signs on all age groups, EKGs, spirometry test, CLIA waived tests such as urinalysis and urine pregnancy tests, and any additional diagnostic tests trained to perform.
Assisting providers during special medical procedures and examinations such as pap smears, annual physical exams, etc. Setting up, operating, cleaning, sterilizing, and maintaining special medical equipment for clinical diagnostic tests such as audiometry, vision examinations, etc.
Ordering medication refills with provider supervision only, and in accordance with the organization’s medication refill policy.
Preparing laboratory and procedure orders as instructed by the provider, and/or in accordance with standing orders. Ensuring that orders align with the patient’s health plan. (Medical Assistants do not perform venipuncture or injections unless they are certified or trained with competency sign off sheet completed by Clinical Lead).
Ensuring that patient exam rooms are clean and sterile and have adequate medical supplies and equipment. Wiping down and disinfecting exam rooms after each patient visit. Recognizing and isolating patients with infectious diseases.
Facilitating timely and complete interaction between providers and patients, including excellent customer service delivery; periodically checking on patients who may be waiting an unusual length of time for the doctor/provider; and knowing how to contact the provider during emergencies.
Pre-visit planning. Reviewing patient medical records prior to their exam to determine what diagnostic test, special supplies or equipment might be needed by the provider. Avoiding discussions concerning the patient’s condition with the patient unless directed by the provider to do so. Knowing how to find lab work, specialist consultation reports, and other test results for provider.
Providing as much assistance to patients, and providers as possible. Including completing prior authorizations and referrals; answering patient or third-party telephone calls; checking and returning voicemails according to office policy; recognizing emergencies and responding appropriately; preparation and completion of patient forms; and distributing medication samples as directed by the provider.
Informing the provider before going on breaks and letting him/her know who will be working in your absence. Never leaving the provider during a procedure or examination unless given specific permission. Notifying co-workers about unfinished tasks before leaving the office. Including orders which need to be completed, patients yet to be seen, special problems, telephone messages, etc.
Performing other medical and/or administrative support duties and responsibilities assigned by the Provider, Practice Manger, or Clinical Lead or other designated Dawson Med management or supervisory personnel.
Computer Application & Technical skills. Ability to type quickly and accurately.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong customer service skills required.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Associate degree with health career track or at least 2 years medical office experience preferred.
Familiarity with a healthcare setting and ability to demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology strongly preferred.
CPR Certification required.
