Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in Podiatric Medicine
Familiarity with all types of foot problems, including genetic abnormalities and deformities
Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate well with both children and the elderly
Empathy and patience when dealing with serious diseases
Responsibilities:
Diagnose and treat minor or serious injuries and diseases of the feet, ankles, and the lower part of the legs.
Conduct foot and ankle surgeries, prescribe orthotics, and apply therapeutic treatments for issues like arthritis, fractures, and feet corn and calluses.
Diagnose disorders of the feet and ankles, such as bunions, calluses, corns, fungal infection of the skin, nails, ankle pronation, gait abnormalities, heel spurs, arch deformities, and ingrown toenails.
Make referrals to other medical specialties if symptoms suggest severe illnesses, such as diabetes or kidney disease.
Make foot casts for custom orthotics.
Prescribe corrective shoes and braces to treat gait and balance issues.
Consult with patients about preventative foot care.
Provide diabetic foot care, such as nail trims, callus removal, peripheral neuropathy testing, skin ulcer treatment, and amputation.
Use various podiatric techniques (like casting and laser therapy) to treat deformities and ailments.
Prescribe joint pain relief medication and foot orthoses that improve mobility.
Review patients’ medical history.
Order additional medical tests (like X-rays, ultrasounds, and bone density tests) to form a better diagnosis if necessary.
